Apple's Late Decision: Scratch-Resistant Display for iPhone Fold (2026)

In a surprising turn of events, Apple is contemplating a significant upgrade for its first foldable iPhone's display. This decision, made quite late in the design process, could lead to a screen that is notably more resistant to scratches and damage than those found on competitors' devices, such as Samsung's offerings.

Recent reports from The Elec reveal that Apple is evaluating two distinct types of film materials that would be applied over the foldable glass used in the iPhone. This film serves a crucial role, as it is the layer that users directly interact with, designed to safeguard the underlying display from potential harm.

While Samsung opts for a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film for their foldable models, Apple appears to be leaning towards a transparent polyimide (PI) film, which could provide enhanced protection. An industry insider mentioned that, although Apple has not yet finalized its choice regarding the foldable display technology, the transparent PI film seems to be the frontrunner among options.

Initially, Apple had set its sights on employing a PET film but later shifted gears to consider the benefits of a transparent PI film as a viable alternative. However, time is of the essence, and Apple must make this critical decision soon. Historically, screen-related decisions are typically wrapped up by September, as creating the necessary OLED substrates is a time-consuming process.

For traditional iPhone launches, the initial test production usually kicks off around mid-February, followed by mass production trials anticipated in May. Interestingly, the lower expected demand for the foldable iPhone could actually play to Apple’s advantage. Typically, the company builds an inventory of iPhones ahead of their launch; however, given the predicted high price tag exceeding $2,000 for the foldable model, sales may not reach the usual volumes.

This potentially reduced demand might give Apple some flexibility in its production timelines. As a result, a delay in deciding on the display components might not significantly impact the first manufacturing run.

Apple seeks to distinguish its product from the competition by opting for this premium solution. Both film types provide adequate protection, yet utilizing a transparent PI film layer would elevate the device to a more luxurious tier.

This premium approach offers tangible advantages for consumers purchasing Apple's inaugural foldable iPhone. The transparent PI film boasts a higher surface hardness, thereby reducing susceptibility to scratches.

With the anticipated announcement of the so-called iPhone Fold set for this fall, a conclusive decision regarding the film is expected very soon. Reports indicate that Chinese manufacturer Lens Technology will be responsible for producing the foldable glass display and will also bond the chosen film before the final assembly takes place.

The inner display of the iPhone Fold is speculated to be 7.8 inches, featuring an invisible crease that could set Apple's entry into the foldable market apart from others. Additionally, the outer display is projected to measure 5.5 inches.

Should these rumors prove accurate, the iPhone Fold will launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this fall. While The Elec generally sources reliable information from the supply chain, it's important to approach their context with caution, as there are valid concerns about Apple making last-minute alterations to the display at this advanced stage in the development cycle.
