In a heartbreaking turn of events, Bo Nix suffered a broken right ankle during the final moments of overtime in the Denver Broncos' thrilling playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. This injury will require surgical intervention, which means Nix will be unable to participate for the remainder of the playoffs.
Coach Sean Payton shared this unexpected news about his second-year quarterback shortly after the Broncos achieved a significant win, their most impressive in a decade. With Nix sidelined, backup Jarrett Stidham, who has a record of 1-3 as a starter over the past six seasons, is set to take the reins in the upcoming AFC Championship game next weekend.
"Stiddy’s ready," Payton confidently stated after addressing the media about the injury following Denver’s nail-biting 33-30 triumph over Josh Allen and the Bills.
The injury occurred during a play where Nix attempted a keeper but ended up losing two yards after being tackled by safety Cole Bishop. Although Nix was limping noticeably after the tackle, nobody anticipated that the injury would be as severe as it turned out to be.
Remarkably, on the very next play, Nix managed to throw a deep pass to Marvin Mims Jr., resulting in a 30-yard pass interference penalty that positioned the Broncos within striking distance for a field goal. Subsequently, Nix took a knee to set up Wil Lutz’s game-winning 23-yard field goal.
Looking ahead, Payton confirmed that Nix is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama.
"He’s such a strong, faith-based guy," Payton remarked, recalling how Nix was composed while sitting in the hallway with his family. "He knows that God’s got a plan for him. He mentioned having endured a broken ankle previously in high school and again at Auburn."
In a light-hearted moment, Payton joked, "I didn’t realize that. If I had known, I might not have drafted you!"
Interestingly, during a postgame interview with CBS, Nix did not mention feeling any pain or discomfort, leaving reporters waiting in the interview room for his arrival when Payton broke the news instead.
Selected as the 12th overall pick from Oregon in the 2024 NFL draft, Nix has already tied Russell Wilson’s NFL record with 24 wins in his first two seasons. This latest victory marks his inaugural playoff win, a stark contrast to last year’s loss in Buffalo, showcasing how he led the Broncos to secure the top seed in the AFC this season.
Payton praised Nix's resilience, stating, "He’s a tough cookie. This team has faced numerous injuries throughout the year and continues to rise to the challenge."
But here’s where it gets controversial: How will the Broncos fare without their star quarterback? Can Stidham step up to the plate and lead the team to victory? Share your thoughts below and let us know what you think about this shocking turn of events!
