'A Legacy to Protect': Simone Ledward Boseman on Grieving and Guarding Her Husband's Secrets
In an exclusive interview, Simone Ledward Boseman reflects on the profound impact of her husband, the late Chadwick Boseman, and the challenges of preserving his legacy. It's been five years since the world lost a global icon, and Simone shares her journey through grief and the delicate balance of protecting his memory.
'The edges of grief soften with time,' Simone says, 'but the pain is still raw.' She navigates the delicate task of sharing her husband's story while respecting his privacy. 'It's a fine line,' she explains, 'between honoring his memory and keeping certain aspects of our lives private.'
When Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020, the world was shocked. He was just 43, and his rise to fame had been meteoric. The release of 'Black Panther' two years prior had catapulted him into the spotlight, making him the first Black superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the news was even more devastating because his battle with colorectal cancer had been kept a secret.
'A cancer diagnosis can change everything,' Simone says. 'Chad wanted to keep working, to keep living his life as normally as possible. He didn't want his illness to define him or interfere with his career.' And so, he continued to act, shooting seven films and making countless public appearances, all while undergoing treatment.
As Chadwick's star rose, so did the interest in Simone. She acknowledges that people's curiosity isn't always malicious, but it can be a double-edged sword. 'Privacy was always a priority for us,' she says. 'When you're in the public eye, you have to be careful who you trust with your plans.'
Only a few close family members and friends knew about Chadwick's health. 'The circle became a dot,' Simone explains. Despite this, there were signs to the outside world that something was amiss, like his dramatic weight loss during the lockdown in 2020. But the speculation was short-lived, and the couple maintained their privacy.
Simone and Chadwick's romance began at the Hollywood Bowl in 2014. She was working as an events executive, and he was there to perform a duet with D'Angelo. Their first encounter was memorable, with Simone describing Chadwick's puppy dog eyes. Their first date was in Franklin Village, and they eventually moved in together, settling in the same neighborhood where they had their first date.
Their relationship wasn't a secret, but it was private. However, with Chadwick's rising fame, especially after his debut as T'Challa in 'Captain America: Civil War,' the attention became overwhelming. Simone recalls the challenges of being in a mixed-heritage relationship, especially when she faced criticism online after the release of 'Black Panther.'
Simone's own journey is fascinating. Growing up in a conservative religious community, she initially planned to become an ultrasound technician. But a chance encounter with a music industry studies course reignited her childhood dream of becoming a singer. She eventually left her religious organization, feeling disconnected from her faith, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her studies and, ultimately, her love for Chadwick.
After Chadwick's passing, Simone faced the expectation of grieving publicly. 'It was a challenging time,' she says. 'I had to find my way through the grief while also considering how to carry his legacy forward.' She adopted a guiding principle: 'I don't have to create his legacy; I just have to protect it.'
One of the ways she's doing this is by supporting the revival of Chadwick's play, 'Deep Azure,' at Shakespeare's Globe in London. The play, which tells the story of the aftermath of an unarmed Black man's death at the hands of a police officer, holds a special place in Chadwick's heart. It mirrors a real-life situation he experienced while studying at Howard University, where his friend, Prince Jones, was murdered by a Black police officer.
'Deep Azure' is a powerful choice for Shakespeare's Globe, and Simone has been involved in the London production, helping to contextualize the play for a British audience. She remembers 2018 as the couple's best year together, with 'Black Panther' breaking box office records and Chadwick being cancer-free.
Simone's life has changed significantly since then. She recently moved back to her hometown to be closer to family and is deep into planning her first business venture, a neighborhood wine bar. She's also pursuing her music career as a singer under the name 'sahn.'
'Chad was my most important spiritual teacher,' she says. 'He expanded my view of life and art exponentially.'
And so, Simone continues to talk about Chadwick, to remember him, and to protect his legacy. 'I want people to understand him as a full human being,' she says. 'His life was about how he lived, not how he died.'
