Get ready for a thrilling revival of a classic musical! Jonathan Bailey, alongside the incredible Ariana Grande, has just teased an exciting comeback of 'Sunday in the Park with George'. This news has fans buzzing, and with good reason!
The original report by Deadline revealed that these two talented artists will be taking on this iconic musical, and Bailey's recent Instagram post has only fueled the excitement. He shared a captivating image with his Wicked co-star, standing in front of Georges Seurat's masterpiece, 'A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatt'. This painting served as the inspiration for the musical, penned by the legendary Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bailey's caption on the post was simply, 'All it has to be is good.' A bold statement, leaving many to wonder what he meant by it. Could it be a hint at the direction the revival will take?
The revival is set to open at London's Barbican Theatre in 2027, with Marianne Elliott, a Tony and Olivier Award winner, at the helm as director. Elliott's involvement adds an extra layer of anticipation and intrigue to the production.
And this is the part most people miss... The musical is based on Seurat's artwork, which captures the essence of Parisian life, with people from different social classes enjoying a leisurely Sunday in a park by the Seine. Lapine and Sondheim's genius lies in bringing these characters to life, imagining the stories behind the figures in Seurat's painting. The characters of George, a fictionalized version of the painter, and Dot, his witty lover and muse, are central to the narrative. In a unique twist, the same actress plays Dot's daughter, Marie, in the second act.
The original Broadway production featured Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in these roles, while Philip Quast and Maria Friedman brought them to life in London's National Theatre production, directed by Steven Pimlott. This London production even won the Olivier for Best New Musical!
Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford also starred in a Broadway revival in 2017, and were set to bring their talent to London's Savoy Theatre in 2020, but unfortunately, the show was postponed due to the pandemic.
So, with all this history and talent involved, the upcoming revival promises to be a spectacle. But what do you think? Will it live up to the hype? Or is it a risky move? Let's discuss in the comments and share our thoughts on this exciting announcement!
