KZN Premier Thami Ntuli Addresses Chaos in Legislature: A Call for Unity and Stability (2026)

Premier Thami Ntuli has expressed his dismay over the turmoil that erupted in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature on Monday, emphasizing the serious implications such disorder could have on investment opportunities and public sentiment. He pointedly recalled the devastating unrest of July 2021, which not only harmed the economy but also resulted in loss of life.

This recent unrest was reportedly sparked by the sentencing of former president Jacob Zuma to prison by the Constitutional Court for failing to comply with its directives.

During the legislative session, chaos erupted following a failed motion of no confidence against Ntuli put forth by the MK Party. Tensions escalated when the MK Party insisted that the motion be conducted via secret ballot, a request that was ultimately denied by the Speaker of the Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce. The atmosphere turned hostile, leading to shoving and physical confrontations among members of the legislature.

Ntuli described the violent scenes as unfortunate, noting, "We are emerging from a period marked by looting, and we know who is connected to that past. With individuals like Duduzile Zuma facing legal action related to the looting, it is troubling to see that culture manifest itself within the legislature. There should never be any justification for treating a Speaker in such an unacceptable manner."

He continued, "It is disheartening to witness these events unfold. We urge the MK Party that this path they are choosing is misguided; even in disagreement, there is no justification for chaos and violence. It is crucial that we engage in constructive dialogue to ensure a peaceful and stable province."

In his remarks, the Premier emphasized the importance of unity following the discord, stressing that the provincial government must prioritize restoring stability, enhancing service delivery, and addressing the challenges faced by the citizens of KwaZulu-Natal.

During an interview on Tuesday morning, Ntuli remarked, "Regardless of whether one belongs to the ruling party or the opposition, we are all leaders elected by the people. Citizens do not distinguish between government and opposition; they expect all elected officials to serve their interests."

He further contested the MK Party's assertion that they, as the party with the highest number of votes, were entitled to govern, labeling their claim as misleading since they did not secure the simple majority needed for outright victory. He pointed out that when discussions about forming a coalition took place, the MK Party was notably absent.

"We could not allow the province to remain without a government any longer because a lack of governance means a lack of service delivery," concluded Ntuli.
