Get ready for a smoother, safer ride! St. John's is gearing up to roll out more traffic-calming measures across the city, all with the goal of encouraging drivers to slow down and make our streets more pleasant for everyone.
Last year, we saw the introduction of speed cushions on Glenerye Street, Empire Avenue, and Smithville Crescent. These weren't just a one-off experiment! After hearing from residents, the city has decided to make the speed cushions permanent on both Smithville Crescent and Empire Avenue. It's great to see community feedback leading to real changes!
But here's where it gets exciting: the city isn't stopping there. They're planning to test out temporary speed cushions in five additional areas. These tests will be happening in neighborhoods like Goulds, Kenmount Terrace, and the east end of the city. This proactive approach helps them gather more data before making any permanent decisions.
And this is the part most people miss... While the city is committed to making our streets safer, the exact locations for these temporary installations are being shared! You can find a full list of where these temporary speed bumps or cushions will be placed by visiting VOCM dot com.
This spring, keep an eye out for these temporary traffic speed cushions. They'll be popping up on the following streets:
- Old Bay Bulls Road – Specifically between Elliott’s Road and Rosemarkie Street.
- Great Eastern Avenue – From Iceland Place all the way to Ladysmith Drive.
- Middleton Street – You'll find them between Harding Road and Newfoundland Drive.
- Parsons Road – The stretch from Ennis Ave to Logy Bay Road 3 will be included.
- Heffernan’s Line – From Back Line to Main Road.
These measures are all about creating a more livable city by reducing excessive speeding. What are your thoughts on these new traffic-calming initiatives? Do you think speed cushions are the best solution, or are there other methods the city should explore? Let us know in the comments below!
